My husband and I finally got our metal detectors about a week ago. Luckily, his family has some old farm land at the foot of the mountains, and there's a bunch of trails and wooded areas where we live, so they're both great spots for metal detecting!
On Saturday, we found loaded up our small backpacks, grabbed our equipment, and headed up towards the land that his uncle's family owns. It is a gorgeous area that has been fallow for some time - it was once used as a cow farm. Currently, a large orchard still thrives right beside it. The first area we chose to search was the land around the old tenet house. This large wooden house still stands, although many parts of it are caving in, and the building is generally unstable. Just a small brisk of wind will make the entire structure creak and moan - it was amazing but slightly spooky to be near!
This is a front view of the house - a few years ago the right side was torn open in order to get a stove out from the top floor of the house. The steps would have likely been too unstable to handle the weight.
This was one area that we metal detected thoroughly. See the bricks towards the bottom of the house, where it is collapsing? This was part of the chimney. Just to the left, in the brush, we found numerous things hidden under the ground; this was likely a "dumping" area. The most interesting item that was found in this area was by my husband - it was an old medicine bottle that had been broken in half, with some of the writing still intact.
Another view of the backside of the house.
Part of the upper left side of the house has partially caved in, leaving this gouging hole within the structure.
A side view of the front of the house.
The remains of what used to be the back door/porch. The steps leading from the door have completely disintegrated, and the foundation is starting to crumble inwards.
My husband found a huge piece of an old wood stove door (it's currently being cleaned off, to identify the wording), and I found a few neat things as well. The three biggest finds for me was an old axe head, a head gasket and a metal tooth to an old farming tiller!
This was the tooth we found to an old tiller (with a nail we found nearby laying on it).
Here's the old axe head we found! Couldn't believe it was so close to the surface, we only had to dig a few inches in the ground to reach it.
Here's my sweet husband, helping me pinpoint and search for items.
One of my favorite pictures <3
We had an amazing time, and hopefully (weather permitting), we're going to go back this weekend to try searching other areas. My cousin lost her husband's class ring up there near one of the other tenet houses years ago while visiting, so it would be amazing to find this for her. :)
The break from working on my Etsy store was definitely needed, but I can't slow down too much. My ultimate goal is to have 1,000 items ready by the time the Christmas season hits. By this time next year (or within the next two years), I'd like to have 2,000 - 3,000 items available at all times.
I've always thought it would be fun to search for stuff around old dwellings like that - do you know how old those houses are? Good luck, and have fun with the metal detecting! ~Stephanie
