Using Facebook to Promote Your Etsy Shop? Proceed With Caution!

When opening your Etsy shop, many people will fly to Facebook and open up a business page in order to advertise to their target market (and thus get more sales). In the past, this was a good business move - you could build your audience and connect with them via social media and hopefully bring more traffic and sales to your shop.

However, this is no more.

With Facebook's new setup, you essentially now have to pay Facebook twice in order to connect with your audience - first when you pay to gain followers through their ads, and a second time when you want your posts to reach them through "boosting".

All in all - it's a complete scam and a money sink hole for Etsy business owners - we typically do not have the revenue to spare for such large amounts of empty advertising costs. This is especially true in comparison to large corporations like Wal-Mart, Target, Kohl's, etc.

Veritasium, a popular channel on YouTube, explains this new scammy Facebook system perfectly. I highly recommend checking his video out to before paying Facebook a dime!

So the big question is - what should you do for promoting outside of Facebook?

Although it may vary depending on what you're selling, I highly recommend using the following social media platforms to gain an audience:
  • Pinterest
  • Twitter
  • Tumblr
  • Blogger (for your own personal blog)
  • Google + (specifically joining Etsy communities, they help!)

Hope this helps! What has been your experience with advertising on Facebook? How about other media outlets? Share your thoughts below!
