UPS Delayed Deliveries for Christmas - First World Problems!

There are a lot of things that I could say about this particular debacle - and none of my negative thoughts are directed at UPS and their drivers at all. The consumers, the whining drove who are complaining that the delays from UPS ruined their Christmas, need to really get their life into perspective.

Our Etsy shop ships out via USPS, and like UPS, there have been some delays, which were expected. Why, you may ask, would I expect delays? Because it's the Christmas season, that's why. If you paid for express shipping, and didn't get it, as long as you get refunded for it, I think your "it's the end of the world" complaining can stop right there.

Being in a retail atmosphere (even on Etsy) can really jade you towards negative customer behavior. I've seen people work their behinds off only to get reprimanded by a customer looking to complain. To say that I'm disgusted with some of the outrageous and hateful words towards UPS and their workers would be a massive understatement.

So, to keep this from being an angry long diatribe, I'll just make a quick bulleted list for my complaining friends who are populating the internet forums and the official Facebook page of UPS.

Common Sense Tips for Online Christmas Shopping:
  • A present delivering late should not "ruin your Christmas". If the quality of your Christmas depends on the arrival and quantity of material items, there may be an issue with your priorities.
  •
  • Do NOT order Christmas items after December 1st - I don't care what the delivery company promises, you're taking a risk. This is especially true for international orders.
  • Spamming the UPS Facebook page with your hateful words will not make people sympathize with why little Johnny or Susie didn't get their special toy. It will make you look like a total douche.
  • The packages you're complaining about? Just keep in  mind that in about 3-6 months, the importance of that gift (unless it's something big like an engagement ring) will likely be forgotten, while your feedback and lashing out at deliverers will not, and will have an ultimate effect on their company policies. Let's just hope that UPS delivery workers will still get Christmas off next year. Because, you know, they have lives too.
  • DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO ORDER GIFTS! I realize that this is a repeat, but many people do not seem to get this. ESPECIALLY do not order at the last minute and then bitch about how the gift is late. No shit, Sherlock. This is the Christmas season, look at point number two above!
  • Above all, don't forget the reason for the season. Even if you do not practice Christianity, it certainly won't hurt anyone to act like a decent human being and practice kindness towards their fellow men.

  1. This is why you should just get all your Christmas shopping done in like October. Waiting until the last minute only causes problems!
